Susan is mounted on a wooden turntable, a receptacle that I designed and constructed in January 2021 to assist in storing baking supplies during lockdown. The turntable is a functional design and symbolic of the full circle the Hudson Valley community has traveled through together this year, loaf by loaf, meal by meal, snowstorm by snowstorm, passing by passing.
An important part of my life is local community. Not having that in the traditional sense, I turned to baking and leaving my creations at the Community Fridge, to continue to create shared experiences with everyone. Baking is so joyful, the simple act of mixing flour, yeast, and water, an opportunity to partake with others.
My art generally carries themes of participation and theatre in the form of civic installations. In this time of shared isolation, this turntable stored the pieces of a delicious experience to be enjoyed by all who wished to taste at least 6 feet away from each other. Community creates many opportunities to continue this experience in trusting each other, mutual aid, communal meals, and political expression. The values that we live our lives by during this uncertain time will be what we have left when all of this is over.
